The weekend programme: Saturday - Race video

All day Saturday, in each hotel, we will be showing a continuous video of the 2009 Flora London Marathon.

In part this is to create a little “atmosphere” but there are some very practical lessons that can be learnt from watching sections e.g.

around the start – how the starting “pens” work, the size of the field on both the Red and Blue starts
carefully watch film of the drink stations; the race clinics deal with the inherent dangers at the points on the course – be that missing a drink station as its “too busy” or to avoiding being hit by a bottle or falling on one
watching how the crowds react to runners with names on their vests!
watching how the runners were coping / not coping with the heat
what happens if you do “hit the wall” as it is called

Those who do watch can often learn a lot from scrutinising what happened to others last year – especially if the forecast happens to be for similar weather.

It is noticeable in the evening how much more critical some comments are – especially from those who have been to the Race Clinics – they can see things going wrong or what is happening to those who should have known better. Hopefully they will not repeat those mistakes next day!
