Running for charity
To finish the marathon and have that medal around your neck is certainly a great feeling.
What can make it even more special is the thought that by finishing the marathon you have raised an invaluable sum of money for a favourite or special charity.
However large or small the amount raised, it will be invaluable in aiding the welfare of someone or perhaps contribute the final crucial funding of some critical research that will benefit thousands.
There are two ways that this can happen:
In 2009, WRP Tours welcomed nearly 1,000 runners and a majority were raising money to support their chosen charity.
Those who had negotiated a Gold Bond place had already agreed the minimum amount required though many were both delighted and proud to be able to hand over even greater sums – wonderful news for their chosen charity!
Even more good news can come when runners who have secured their own place via the ballot, a club place, “Good for age” entry etc., contact them and offer to raise money using their “own place”. The subsequent donations from own place runners can vary enormously – some were as modest as £50, others £500 and we heard of one lady and her team of supporters who raised a staggering £5,000!
Charities invariably offer excellent practical support to both their teams of “Bond” and “own place” runners. Many provide a range of practical benefits which may include:

All of the charities listed below are both recommending, and in many cases organising activities, with WRP Tours. What one charity does may vary widely but last year one or more arranged:
Being part of the charity group can be the icing on this great weekend and certainly helps to create a great atmosphere and an opportunity for some good photos at the start!
The charity cheering points are also an invaluable support for many spectators who might otherwise be alone in this unfamiliar city and having joined one for a while last year I can vouch for the amazing enthusiasm being generated for every one of “their” team. What a shame it could not have been bottled!

This joint support venture between WRP and the charities who promote our tours is aimed at giving all those charity runners all the very best support and very best facilities ….. together with a totally stress-free weekend.
If you need advice then Malcolm Gammon is WRP’s senior staff member with primary link with the charities.

If you are still looking for an entry and would be interested in knowing of any availability of Gold Bond places and how much a particular charity might need for one then call the Office (01934-629911) and ask either for John or Malcolm.
